I spent forty years in a search that took me to the deepest, darkest, and most intricate corners of the Western Esoteric Tradition. I have sat in temples smelling of ancient incenses, holding consecrated daggers, and reciting coded words. I was initiated, recognized, and given degrees. I truly believed that the Divine was a prize to be won through perfect performance—that if I cast the circle just right, the veil would finally thin.
I was wrong.
The veil doesn’t thin because of a ritual; the veil is an illusion we create with our own intellectual and spiritual complexity. By looking for the “Sacred” in secret rooms and coded books, I was actively ignoring the God standing right in front of me in the sunlight.
The Weight of the Tools
As my journey deepened into the higher orders—from the Martinists to the Hermetic Kabbalists—I realized we were collecting tools the way children collect toys. We had wands, swords, pentacles, and complex, multi-layered diagrams of the soul. We were “Masters of the Universe” on paper, yet often strangers to the simple, raw peace of our own hearts.
In this image (above), I am leaning on a medieval carved stone font. In another life, I would have seen that font as a powerful ritual object. I would have focused on its carved symbols and its specific “consecration.” Today, I see it as what it actually is: a beautiful piece of carved stone, resting in the woods, being slowly reclaimed by moss and ivy.
The tools of ritual magic often become crutches. We start to believe we cannot speak to the Source without a translator, a tool-kit, or a secret handshake. The Pathless Way is about putting down the tools and trusting that your own breath and your own open heart are all that is required.
The Return to the Simple Altar
I have come full circle. I have realized that the most sacred space isn’t a consecrated temple or a high altar—it’s the damp soil of a bluebell wood or the rugged coast of a sacred bay.
When I sit under an ancient oak tree, I don’t need to “cast a circle” for protection. The horizon is my circle. I don’t need a “consecrated blade” to call the elements; the sun and wind do that without my help. I have traded the theatre of spirituality for the presence of it. Nature is a church that is always open, and it requires no membership fee and no initiation.
Leaving the Orders was my Graduation
Leaving the complex systems and the hierarchical orders wasn’t a failure. It was my graduation. It takes a long time to become simple enough to realize that God doesn’t need your performance. He needs your attention. He needs you to listen.
I am no longer an Adept. I am a traveler. I am no longer looking for “The Master”; I am a student of the silence. And the view from the ground is much, much clearer than the view from the throne.
